Tip #4 - What is a Hash Tag

A hash tag is a tag such as "#keyword" that you place somewhere in your tweet to add a contextual reference to your post.

Search engines such as Twitter Search, and other Twitter related apps can pick up on these keywords.

Hashtags on Twitter often describe popular memes. One is #followfriday, where a Twitter user posts a tweet linking to some tweeps they follow and would like to share with the world. People use the hastag #followfriday to let others know they are participating in the meme.

Hashtags are also great for keeping track of events. For examble, Tweeps who are attending a conference, might tag their conference related tags with a hashtag so that others at the conference can read those specific tweets.
